Grip and Stance: The 2 Constants for Solid Fundamentals
Your grip and stance are the foundation of your putt, we have to dial in before anything else. We all dream of laser-focused putting on the green every time. But before you start chasing the ghost of Tiger’s putts, let’s get back to basics.
The Grip: Your Link to the Ball
Think of your grip as your handshake with the club. A weak handshake (loose grip) means you lose control during the swing, leading to pushes. Conversely, a death grip will strangle the clubface, causing pulls that’ll leave you heartbroken on the green.
The key is a neutral, comfortable grip. Imagine holding a bird gently but firmly – that’s the pressure you want. Proper hand placement is crucial too. Look up terms like “neutral grip” and “interlocking grip” to find what feels best for you.
The Stance: Your Power Base
Your stance is your platform for generating power and accuracy. A balanced stance is key. Think shoulder-width apart with your weight evenly distributed on both feet. Here’s where visualizing helps: imagine your feet forming a stable triangle.
Ball position also plays a big role. For most putters, you want the ball positioned slightly forward in your stance for crisp contact. Experiment to find the sweet spot that gives you the best feel.
Grip and Stance: The Perfect Blend
These two fundamentals work together. A proper grip allows you to rotate your body and swing the putter on the desired plane, while a solid stance provides the stability to transfer power from the ground up. Mastering both will lead to a repeatable swing that produces consistent roll off the clubface.
Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a perfect swing. Focus on these fundamentals, practice regularly, and you’ll be making more putts in no time. Now get out there and grip it and sink it…the right way!
